Obituary of Muriel Viola Rhodes

RHODES, Muriel.

It is with great sadness that the family of Muriel Rhodes announce her passing Wednesday evening April 3, 2019 at Grand River Hospital where she died peacefully after suffering a stroke 5 days earlier.

Our mother was born July 3, 1929. She lived with her family in Grimsby, Ontario, but was actually born during a trip to Kenmore, near Buffalo, in New York state. Her heritage, is Irish. Her great grandparents left Belfast during the potato famine in the 1800’s.

She was pre-deceased by her parents Clarence and Elva Gracey of Grimsby, her sister Glady Leslie and her husband Norm of Toronto and her  former husband John Rhodes of Kitchener-Waterloo.

She is survived by us, her three sons, Ted Rhodes and his spouse Reneta of Calgary, Doug Rhodes and his spouse Edie of Kitchener and Bob Rhodes and spouse Sue of Breslau.

She has 5 grandchildren, Doug and Mike of Windsor, and Stephanie, Alex and Nick of Kitchener as well as great grandson Luca of Windsor. All are named Rhodes.

She was a resident of Greenbrook Drive in the Forest Hill neighbourhood of Kitchener for nearly 40 years. For the last 10 plus years she lived at Highland Place Retirement Home where she had many friends.

She was a passionate golfer and a longtime member of Westmount Golf and Country Club where she also curled. She was a lifelong bridge aficionado. For over 10 years she worked in the business office at Wilfred Laurier University.

After retiring she became a world traveller. Over a ten year span following her retirement she visited Australia, Italy, France and Belgium, the Galapagos Islands, Arizona and cruised to Alaska and the Panama Canal. A favourite destination for many decades was always her sister Glady’s farm on Howe Island in the St. Lawrence River.

As per her wishes she has been cremated.

There will be a reception honouring her life Tuesday April 9, 2019 at 7pm at Erb and Good Family Funeral Home at 171 King Street South in Waterloo.

As a lifelong animal lover we request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Humane Society of your choice in honour of Sneakers, Little Cat, Sandy, Ringo and Q.
