Obituary of Ingeborg R. Schmidt

Schmidt, Ingeborg R.

Passed away peacefully on January 10, 2022 at Lanark LTC only 3 months short of her 100th birthday. Predeceased by her beloved husband Earl W. Schmidt of Waterloo and seven siblings (Germany). Survived by her sons Chris Betker (Elisabeth), Achim Betker (Rebecca), and step-sons Gordon Schmidt (Janet), Kenneth Schmidt (Aline), and step-daughter Marlene Snook (Keith). Dear “Grandma”, “Oma”, “Aunt” and “Tante Inge” to numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family living in Ontario, British Columbia, Costa Rica, Germany, Hong Kong and France.

Ingeborg was born in Riga, Latvia and moved by herself to Germany in her teens. She had a life filled with many rich experiences, languages and vocations. Her appetite for adventure and knowledge was insatiable. In 1955 she emigrated to Canada with her young family and soon became a very proud Canadian. Although her life was at times very difficult, her resolute spirit, sense of humour and intellect always saw her persevere. She and her second husband Earl built a comfortable life together and throughout this time her main strength was her unconditional love and dedication to family and extended family members. Many social events were planned involving delicious home-baked cakes.  Her entrepreneurial spirit and interest in life experiences became a beacon of strength and a role model for the following generations.

Ingeborg’s family wishes to express their gratitude for the exceptional personal care she received from the wonderful staff at Lanark Heights LTC. The love and personal attention especially in the last days of her life by the personnel of the Maple Home Area was very touching.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will follow at a later date. A private graveside ceremony will also be planned for South East Hope Cemetery, Shakespeare at a later date.

Condolences for the family and any donations to the Waterloo Wayside Centre located at Emmanuel United Church may be arranged through the Erb & Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. Waterloo at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
