Obituary of Donald Alexander Stewart
Donald Alexander Stewart, known affectionately as Don, Papa Don and Papa Stu, to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2024, in Kitchener, Ontario. Born on November 27, 1945, in Sudbury, Ontario, to parents Beatrice and Ozzie. Don's journey through life was marked by his spirited nature, his friendly demeanor, and his loving heart.
Beloved husband to his wife, Jean (nee McEachran), and a proud father to his daughter, Tai (Justin Handley). His joy was multiplied with the arrival of his granddaughter, Hannah Bea, who became the apple of his eye. Although he was predeceased by his son, Regan, Don's legacy lives on through his family, including his brothers, David and Bruce.
Don wore many hats, both literally and figuratively. Believing in living life 100%. From his time teaching, urban planning, aquascaping and many hours volunteering with new Canadians, as well as the Trillium Gift of Life network. His love of nature fostered him to spend lots of time outside, in his garden, or any garden he could get his hands into. Always up for an adventure, he explored the world with an open heart, making friends and memories along the way. Don and Jean spent time living in B.C. with Kitimat and Victoria holding a special place in their hearts where their children joined the family. Don loved the ocean, diving, salmon fishing, crab trapping and hiking on the island with his family. His affinity for animals and nature was evident to all who knew him, as he often shared stories of his encounters with wildlife. You can take the boy out of the North, but never the North out of the boy.
Don called Sunnyside (Long Term Care) home for the past 5 years, moving into Cider Mill, where he was known as quite the spirited character! Always complimenting anyone wearing his favourite and signature colour, blue. He was quick to join the resident leadership team, won a green thumb award and participated in the Walk and Roll for the Sunnyside foundation. The family is forever grateful for the special care and kindness he received from the staff, who he loved dearly.
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Don will remember him fondly. His friendly smile will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all the lives he touched. As you walk through gardens, admiring the beauty of nature, recall Don's life as it was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived.
Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Don’s life at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, on Sunday, November 24, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
