Obituary of Joan Maxine Mitchell

Waterloo, Ontario

Joan passed away early in the morning on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. She is survived by her husband, Bruce, her sister Donna, and her nephew, Kevin, and his family (wife Aimee, and children Hudson, Bennett, Emma and Cate).  She was predeceased by her father (Malcom), her mother (Grace), brother (Hugh) and brother-in-law (Bob).

Joan was born in Saskatchewan, and in high school in Saskatoon during her graduation year she was recognized as the best athlete (both girls and boys) in her high school.  She completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Saskatchewan, and then worked in a number of libraries in Vancouver and Liverpool, England, where her husband studied for and received a PhD.  They returned to Canada and went to Waterloo, Ontario, where Bruce had been hired as a new faculty member at the University of Waterloo. She commuted to Toronto to earn her Librarian’s degree at the University of Toronto.  She then was hired by Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfrid Laurier University) and became the first Librarian of Archives and Special Collections where she worked until retirement.

Joan and Bruce enjoyed travelling, and made many trips to various countries in Europe.  As an individual, Joan developed strong friendships, especially with her neighbours, and actively supported a number of them as they aged.

Joan was a thoughtful and caring person, who frequently reached out to provide assistance.  She was loved, admired and respected by her husband, Bruce, and her nephew Kevin and his family.

Joan’s family thanks the health team at the Grand River Hospital, who worked diligently to support her in her final days.

Cremation has taken place, and there will not be a formal burial ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to Parkinson Canada in Joan’s memory would be appreciated.
